Chapter 4 Walkthrough
Chapter Walkthroughs>Chapter 4
The Vile Peaks
Your party splits, giving you a party of Lightning and Hope, and Sazh and Vanille.
You start off with Sazh and Vanille. Run towards the fork in the road it to trigger an event. After that you’ll be watching a cutscene of Day 11.
PARTY CHANGE - Lightning and Hope
Paradigm Setup
Slash and Burn (2)
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Hope | - | Ravager |
War and Peace (2)
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Hope | - | Medic |
Enemies here can kill Hope rather easily, so using War and Peace will make battles less stressful. We’d suggest it as your default Paradigm, switching to Slash and Burn when you're near full health.
As you take over Lightning and Hope, you’ll have a small Tutorial on the Synergist role, telling you how it works, etc. We barely touched the Synergist, but supposedly it’s useful to bring one in at the beginning of battle to buff your party. After that, he’ll sit there like a statue, so you’ll want to swap roles/Paradigms.
Run forward, and jump over the debris on the right. Fight the Thexteron to loot a Librascope. Jump back out to the main path, and fight your way up the road. Jump across the gaps, and take out the Watchdrones. Kill the Pulsework Soldier, then run ahead to trigger a cutscene of Day 13.
PARTY CHANGE - Sazh and Vanille
You receive another small Tutorial on the Synergist role, and then one on Three-way Battles.
Note: Three-way battles are the best way to power level, because all the enemies involved will start at half health. It’s always best to Preemptive Strike the group. The Preemptive keeps both of your enemies attacking each other, only attacking you once one of the enemy groups has been destroyed. You’ll usually want to damage both groups evenly, so that the survivors are easily killed. If you don’t get a Preemptive, both enemy groups will turn against you, creating a very difficult battle. If you fail a Preemptive, simply ‘Retry’ the battle.
Run forward, giving the three-way battle a try. Kill one or two Watchdrones first, and then take the Pulsework Soldier to low health. After that, destroy them all. Activate the machine in the middle to clear the path.
Take out the Pulsework Soldier and Thexterons, and run forward. You’ll see a Treasure Sphere on your left, and a large battle with Thexterons, Watchdrones, and a Pulsework Soldier. Take them down to loot the accessory Black Belt. Run into the tunnel, and activate the switch on the right to clear the path.
Kill the Thexterons and Pulsework Soldiers ahead, and proceed forward towards the wall to trigger a cutscene, in which Hope (can you guess?) whines some more. I’ll never understand why people are more annoyed by Vanille than Hope, it’s just weird. Anyway, Hope has now been added to your party.
PARTY CHANGE - Sazh, Vanille, and Hope
Paradigms
Tri-Disaster (2)
| Sazh | - | Ravager |
| Vanille | - | Ravager |
| Hope | - | Ravager |
Your Choice of a Healing Paradigm (2)
Now run forward, and jump up the metal machinery on the left. Kill the Pulsework Soldier at the top to loot the Ninurta. Proceed past the Save Station, killing the Pulsework Soldier and Incubus as you go, and then triggering a cutscene.
Run onward, killing the Incubus as you enter the spiral-eight shaped area, and then jump up the rocks to dispatch the Pulsework Soldiers.
You’ll see a Save Station on your left. Jump up there to loot a Phoenix Down and the accessory Metal Armband. Run back to the main path and follow the waypoint. Proceed past the Save Station to trigger another cutscene.
PARTY CHANGE - Sazh, Lightning, and Vanille
*Don’t forget to use the Crystarium throughout the game to make your characters stronger.
Paradigm Setup
Relentless Assault (2)
| Sazh | - | Ravager |
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Vanille | - | Ravager |
Diversity (2)
| Sazh | - | Ravager |
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Vanille | - | Medic |
Run up the stairs, skirting the Pulsework Soldiers if you want (they’re long battles…). Follow the waypoint through the canyon, killing off the enemies that stand in your way. When you hit the dead end, activate the machine to lower the bridge. Proceed forward, killing the Incubus/Succubus that jump down on you. After this, it gives you the option of skirting the next battle by taking the left path. The enemies are guarding a Treasure Sphere containing the accessory Ember Ring (Resist Fire +20%), which will be useful in the next boss battle. Bite the bullet and go for the loot.
Run up to the Save Station and prepare for a two part boss battle.
Defeating Dreadnought
*Note: If you ‘Retry’ the second fight, you will have to do the first fight over again. Choose your Paradigms and equipment well so that you can beat both fights the first time around.
Paradigm Setup
Same as Above
Relentless Assault (2)
| Sazh | - | Ravager |
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Vanille | - | Ravager |
Diversity (2)
| Sazh | - | Ravager |
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Vanille | - | Medic |
Strategy
Equip Sazh with the Ember Ring. It will come in handy for the second fight. Don't forget to upgrade in the Crystarium.
The First Fight: Use Relentless Assault to Stagger and damage him, and swap out to Diversity to heal. He’s pretty easy, Staggering him once or twice should be enough for victory. Dreadnought has one very powerful attack, Wrecking Ball. Switch to Diversity when you see it coming, but don’t worry, it shouldn’t be able to one hit kill your characters as long as they’re in the green.
The Second Fight: This time he has a fire AoE, which he uses regularly. It's a much harder fight this time, with The Wrecking Ball attack being used more often. Use Diversity regularly to keep your party at full health - don't let yourself be caught off guard.
Your Crystarium has expanded again, and you’ve gained access to Lenora’s Garage – a new shop at the Save Station.
You now get a Tutorial on upgrading weapons and accessories, so hopefully you’ve been saving up those components.
Run forward, past the Save Station, where you trigger another cutscene. You’ll fight a quick battle with Lightning and Hope against some PSICOM, and then you’re on the road again.
PARTY CHANGE - Lightning and Hope
Paradigm Setup
Slash and Burn (2)
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Hope | - | Ravager |
War and Peace (2)
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Hope | - | Medic |
When you come to the first fork, take short left path. After killing the PSICOM, loot 3 lengths of Fiber-optic Cable. Head back to the main path, and go down the stone stairs. Take the right path (of the circle shaped area) to loot a Librascope. Fight or dodge the Uhlan below and continue on.
Use the Save Station ahead, and prepare for a mini game. Make sure you save! If you want to retry the mini game you’ll need to load your game again.
Pulse Armament Mini Game (Scavenger’s Trail)
The Basics: To attack, hit X (PS3) or A (XBOX360). You have enough power to attack 3 times. Breaking through a fence replenishes your power, giving you three more attacks.
The Goal: Based on how many enemies you kill, you will get two rewards at the end of the mini game. One is a gil reward, the other an item. You want to kill 40 enemies using the X (PS3) or A (XBOX360) attack to get the highest gil reward. Kicking/walking over them doesn’t count for the gil reward, however, the item reward is calculated off of total kills – so even if you can’t attack them, stomp on them to get a better item reward, with your goal again being 40.
The Rewards: After playing through the mini game 12 times, we’ve thrown our data into a chart. This data isn’t exact, but it gives a good estimate.

If you can't get the 999 gil, don't worry. That much gil won't make a big difference, if any, later in the game.
Run on, grabbing 2 Electrolytic Capacitors before the Save Station. When the path splits, follow it to the right. This leads you to a Treasure Sphere containing another Spark Ring. Run up the main road, again taking the right path at the split. Here you receive a Phoenix Down.
Jump up the rubble, and take the right path if you wish to avoid an Uhlan. Proceed past the Save Station into an eidolon boss battle with Odin.

Use Fortisol
Paradigm Setup
Double Dose (2)
| Lightning | - | Medic |
| Hope | - | Medic |
Slash and Burn
| Lightning | - | Commando |
| Hope | - | Ravager |
Dualcasting (2)
| Lightning | - | Ravager |
| Hope | - | Ravager |
Strategy
There are two tricks to killing Odin – doing damage while there’s a Chain Bonus, and Healing. When Odin activates Ullr’s Shield, switch to Slash and Burn to start a chain (starting a chain with a Commando keeps the Chain bonus from falling so quickly). After that, use Dualcasting to raise your Chain Bonus. Once he starts attacking you’ll need to switch back to Double Dose, but that’s ok, because healing will also help raise the Gestalt Gauge. You will lose your chain gauge while he is attacking you (and you are healing), but that's ok. Keep repeating this, and Odin should fall with time on the clock.
Run forward to trigger the Gestalt Tutorial, and then some cutscenes.
PARTY CHANGE - Sazh and Vanille
Now you’re back with Sazh and Vanille. Run to the path on your right, and follow it back up the cliff for a Phoenix Down.
You’ll see some Treasure Spheres in here that are inaccessible at the moment. Don’t worry, we’ll run back to get them once we’ve activated the power, which will give you access to the machines you see occasionally along the path.
Run past the save, following the waypoint. At the end of the path, activate the machine to make a bridge. Run all the way down to the main landing, where there's a Pulsework Soldier and two Bombs, and run down the side path that skirts the area. Here you find the accessory Auric Amulet. Run past the Save Station, and through the stone canyon. Kill the Gremlins and loot an Ember Ring.
The Power Station
A tower will come into view, and once you step down into the area take an immediate right turn to run through a small side path, and loot a Phoenix Down. Continue through this side path onto the grating above.
The goal here is to activate all four machines, each of which is on a different corner of the outer walkway. Kill the Pulsework Soldier and the Bomb, and then activate the first machine. Activate the other machine on this side, and then cross over to the other walkway. When you’ve activated all four, you’ll see a cutscene where the power turns on, and the door at the end opens up.
You can head through the door right now if you wish, or you can go back for more loot. We’re headed for the loot.
Head back up the canyon, until you arrive back at the main landing, the one with the side path you already looted. Activating the machine across from the side path will lead you to an extra fight, but no loot. So if you’d like another fight, go for it. If you’re in it for the loot, just keep running.
The next machine creates some stairs leading to three Pulsework Soldiers and a Treasure Sphere containing 6 vials of Vibrant Ooze. You can dodge the Pulsework Soldiers and still get the Treasure Sphere.
Head back up the path until you run into the next machine. Head up the newly created stairs to a fight with three Bombs and a Pulsework Soldier. This battle can be difficult if the Bombs decide to all Self-Destruct on your party leader, but have patience and it should be ok the second or third time around… I lied, try eighth or tenth. When you finally kill them, go claim the 8 Iron Shells. That’s all the extra loot to be found.
Head back to Power Station area. Run under the Power Station on the right path (to the right of the Save Station in the center) to grab a Fortisol. Now it’s time to fight your way out the gate, so head forward and into battle. If you’re tired of fighting you can dodge them by luring them out, and booking it down the path. It’s up to you.
Grab the 300 gil ahead, and follow your waypoint forward to a cutscene.
Snow's Flashback - Day 7
Now you’re back with Snow, controlling him during a flashback of Day 7.
Run forward, into the shop across from the pier. Talk to the girl at the counter a few times, and then run out onto the pier to trigger a cutscene with Serah.
You’re now in Chapter 5.
